Nasarawa Assembly Vows to Monitor LGs, Ensure Accountability and Grassroots Development
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has initiated a proactive approach to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of local government funds. In a recent meeting with the 13 Local Government Chairmen in the state, the committee emphasized its commitment to monitoring local government expenditures to guarantee that public funds are utilized effectively for the benefit of the people.
During the session, the committee expressed concerns about the potential for misuse of public funds and pledged to prevent any form of financial misappropriation. The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Musa Abubakar Ibrahim, stated that the House has identified approximately six billion naira within the local government coffers, with a significant portion allocated for salaries, pensions, and other essential expenditures. The committee will actively oversee these funds to ensure they are utilized appropriately and that the intended beneficiaries receive the necessary support.
The committee emphasized that this initiative is not intended to hinder the work of the local government chairmen but rather to fulfill its constitutional duty of ensuring responsible governance and promoting the development of the grassroots. Hon. Ibrahim stressed the importance of fulfilling campaign promises to the people and ensuring that the impact of government is felt at the local level.
The State Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Safiyanu Isa Andaha, expressed the collective commitment of the local government chairmen to utilize public funds judiciously and to cooperate fully with the House of Assembly in its oversight functions. He acknowledged the constitutional responsibility of the House to oversee the activities and finances of the local governments and assured the committee of their full support and cooperation.
Furthermore, the committee clarified that the local governments in the state now enjoy financial autonomy, allowing them greater control over their budgetary decisions. However, the committee stressed that this autonomy does not absolve the local governments from their accountability to the public and the legislative oversight provided by the House of Assembly.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from the House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to commence oversight functions in all 13 local government areas, in accordance with the provisions of Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution as amended. This move signifies a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level in Nasarawa State.
